Problems of Agriculture in Nigeria
Agriculture in simple terms is defined as the production of crops and the rearing of animals for man. Major agricultural products include; Rice, Millet, Maize, cassava,etc..In the past, Export of palm kernels and groundnuts was rampant, but with the discovery of oil in 1956,and it's exportation in 1948, the export of these agricultural produce decreased..With the closure of Nigeria's border, Rice, which is what is mostly consumed in Nigeria, has been produced in high quality, improving the standard of living of farmers, and improving the economy of the country. Although this effort seems laudable, there are certain problems that the Agricultural sector still face.
Nigerian farmers still use crude implements for farming. This reduces productivity as not many agricultural products are cultuvated. The Federal Government needs to play a big role in this aspect by providing enough mechanized tools for farmers..
Finance is another issue that needs to be attended to. Farmers do not have enough money to expand their farm business and are limited to particular resources and productions.. Banks do not give them loans, and when they do, interests are high. There is also the issues of pest and diseases..In the tropic region, the issue of pest and diseases has always been a problem..A good example is during rainy season. Some pest are prevalently high, making it really hard to plant and cultivate crops.
Extension workers are not enough to educate rural farmers on various Agricultural innovations that would improve their agricultural practices and production...
These and many more are the problems of Agriculture in Nigeria and they all need to be attended to,as this would improve not only the agricultural sector, but would also improve the economy of the Country.
